Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA)
The GAMA survey aims to deliver 250,000 optical spectra (3–7Å resolution) over 250 sq. degrees to spectroscopic limits of rAB < 19.8 and KAB < 17.0 mag. Complementary imaging will be provided by GALEX, VST, UKIRT, VISTA, HERSCHEL and ASKAP to comparable flux levels leading to a definitive multi-wavelength galaxy database. The data will be used to study all aspects of cosmic structures on 1kpc t...
متن کاملOn the galaxy stellar mass function, the mass-metallicity relation, and the implied baryonic mass function
A comparison between published field galaxy stellar mass functions (GSMFs) shows that the cosmic stellar mass density is in the range 4–8 per cent of the baryon density (assuming Ωb = 0.045). There remain significant sources of uncertainty for the dust correction and underlying stellar mass-to-light ratio even assuming a reasonable universal stellar initial mass function. We determine the z < 0...
متن کاملThe Correlation of Metallicity Gradient with Galaxy Mass
A number of previous studies have searched for a correlation between radial metallicity gradients and early-type galaxy mass – no convincing trends have been found. Here we re-examine this issue with several key enhancements: using total metallicity from studies that have broken the age-metallicity degeneracy, excluding galaxies with young stellar ages (i.e. those that have experienced a recent...

متن کاملThe Influence of Galaxy Surface Brightness on the Mass–metallicity Relation
We study the effect of surface brightness on the mass–metallicity relation using nearby galaxies whose gas content and metallicity profiles are available. Previous studies using fiber spectra indicated that lower surface brightness galaxies have systematically lower metallicities for their stellar mass, but the results were uncertain because of aperture effects. With stellar masses and surface ...
